    James J. Archer issues “Friendly Indians” rations in 1859 - Inventory Number: DOC 319

    Rare abstract of provisions issued to “Indians” in camp on Colville River October 31, 1850.

    James J. Archer (1817 - 1864) Confederate brigadier general and colonel of the 5th Texas in Hood's Brigade, fought at Antietam, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg where he was captured. Pre-war D.S. as Captain of the 9th Infantry, 1p. sm. folio, "Camp on Colville River W[ashington] T[erritory]", Oct. 31, 1859. Archer signs a Return of Provisions issued in the field to "Friendly Indians" employed in the Quartermaster's Dept., a total of 74 rations. Signed at lower-right, fine condition. The document again mentions friendly Indians visiting camp and giving them 11 days rations.
