Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber Dated 1861 S.C. Bunting Jr. Philadelphia Rarest Maker Ever Known. There are two known examples. What makes this one special is the marking that is stamped at the base of each side of the blade. The ricasso is stamped with the arch stamping that reads "S.C. BUNTING JR. PHILADa" the obverse side is stamped "1861". Bunting was only in business from 1861 until 1865. He and his father owned a business in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where they were engaged as a merchant, hardware dealer that also sold military goods, guns and swords.
Specimen exhibits a nice appearance. Grips are in very good condition with original black bridle leather Twisted brass wire wrap is very good. Brass hilt, with its two-branch guard. The steel scabbard has a nice mottled patina overall.
