South Carolina Palmetto - Constructed of palmetto leaves and sea oats. Nicely displayed with brass plaque reads, "Palmetto & Sea Oats / Secession Cockade / 1860-1865". Frame measures 10 3/4" x 8 3/4".
Cockades of South Carolina palmetto fronds were worn by Charlestonians to symbolize their defiance of the Union at the secession convention in December 1860. Later, the cockades were worn throughout the South as emblems of sectional solidarity. Handmade of South Carolina palmetto and sea oats. Truly a unique and rare artifact.
