Union Forge Cap by Murphy & Griswold - Forage Cap by Thomas Murphy & William Griswold. Probably the most recognizable of all piece of Civil War headgear, this highly desirable forage cap is made of dark blue wool and has the letter "F" affixed to the front with leather tabs. There are a few minor moth nips at the rear. The original chinstrap is held fast with two eagle "I" infantry buttons, the leather visor is in fine condition. There is burlap reinforcing under the 1 3/4" wide checkered brown leather sweatband. About one-third of the brown polished cotton body lining remains in the interior. The full crown lining is complete with the makers label, "M. G. / No. 3 / N.Y.". Thomas Murphy and William Griswold were hatters in NYC from 1862 thru 1865 and had contracts with the US Ordnance Dept. for army forage caps. An attractive representative example of this iconic piece of Civil War Federal headgear.
