David D Porter (1813-91), Union Admiral; commanded mortar fleet under Farragut; aided in reduction of Vicksburg. Letter signed, Jan 25, 1882, Washington, to W W Burnham, giving biographical details. In part, “In answer to your question..I entered the Mexican Navy at the age of thirteen remaining there two years when I joined the United States Navy…” Small marginal tear, otherwise very good condition.
