Springfield Model 1842 Lockplate

Description
Springfield Model 1842 Lockplate
Original lockplate from a U.S. Model 1842 Springfield musket, clearly marked with the federal eagle over “U.S.” and stamped “SPRINGFIELD / 1851” at the rear. The Model 1842 was the first U.S. regulation musket produced with fully interchangeable parts and was widely carried in the decade leading up to and throughout the American Civil War.
The lockplate retains a smooth steel surface with visible markings and light age patina. The hammer remains intact, showing the classic curvature of the Model 1842 design. A fine representative component for collectors of Civil War-era firearms and an excellent example of Springfield Armory production.
