Spring Loaded Fleam – Inventory Number: MED 153 / SOLD The medical “Bleeding” device was manufactured by Snowden of Philadelphia, PA.  it has a rare articulating arm and set screw for adjusting the depth of the cut.  Housed in its original leather covered wooden case with red velvet lining. Bloodletting is a medical tradition that probably began in prehistoric times. Its rationale was based on the belief that removing blood eliminated “impure” fluids. From antiquity until the beginning of the 19th century, bloodletting was considered a panacea, and it was the most common and versatile form of medical treatment. Not only was it believed to cure the sick, but also to promote vigor in the healthy.  Inventory Number: MED 153 / SOLD
