1854 Druit’s Modern Surgery
ID’d to Confederate Surgeon, 18th Mississippi Infantry, Gettysburg Veteran Original 1854 edition of Druitt’s Modern Surgery, boldly inscribed on the front flyleaf: “Wm. Allen, Vermont Medical College, May 1st, 1855.” William George Allen of Clinton, Mississippi, graduated from Vermont Medical College and enlisted as a surgeon in the Confederate service on April 20, 1861. He served throughout the war with the hard-fighting 18th Mississippi Infantry, a unit heavily engaged at Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg, before surrendering April 26, 1865. Vermont Medical College, founded in 1827, was among the most respected medical schools of its day, boasting over 100 students in the early 1850s before closing in 1856. This volume, carried and used by Allen, offers a tangible link to Confederate medical practice and battlefield surgery. The profusely illustrated author’s book is accompanied by archival research on Surgeon Allen, documenting his service history and the 18th Mississippi’s wartime record. A rare, well-documented Confederate medical officer’s volume tied to one of the Army of Northern Virginia’s most active regiments.
