Civil War Smooth Side Canteen

 

This original Civil War smooth side canteen features its classic round, tinned-iron body with soldered spout and chain-linked stopper. The smooth side pattern, introduced in 1862, was produced in vast numbers and quickly became one of the most recognizable pieces of Union soldier equipment. Retaining its three strap loops and showing a pleasing, untouched patina from age and field use, this canteen speaks to the daily life of the common soldier. Designed for practicality, it carried the most essential supply—water—during long marches and grueling campaigns. A strong example of the regulation issue smooth side canteen.
