Hand-Blown Apothecary Measuring Glass with Original “Medicine Glass” Leather Case
Wonderful hand-blown apothecary measuring glass, complete with its original fitted leather traveling case. The lid is embossed in gilt: “MEDICINE GLASS” surrounded by decorative flourishes and a cross-hatched surface, a classic style seen in personal and military medical kits of the period. The leather body retains its original interior lining, showing expected age but excellent overall preservation. The glass itself is hand blown with a ground rim and features deeply hand-etched measurement lines and labeled graduations including “TEA,” “TABLE,” SPOONS,” and additional apothecary volume marks. These early etched examples are far scarcer than later machine-molded versions.
Such traveling medicine glasses were essential tools carried by physicians, surgeons, and civilians for accurately dosing liquid medicines, tonics, and laudanum—especially during travel where field kits or saddlebags required compact, durable equipment. A complete, untouched set—glass and case together—making it an excellent example for collectors of Civil War medical instruments, apothecary items, or personal effects.
