Description
E. Lefaucheux Breveté S.G.D.G. 9mm Pinfire Revolver
Paris, France — c. 1860s
A fine example of an authentic Eugène Lefaucheux–manufactured pinfire revolver, clearly barrel-marked:
“E. LEFAUCHEUX Bté S.G.D.G. À PARIS”
(Breveté Sans Garantie Du Gouvernement — “Patented Without Government Guarantee”)
This marking, together with the matching serial number LF 26089, produced at the Lefaucheux Paris workshop rather than one of the many contemporary foreign “Brevete” licensees.
This revolver is the 9mm model, a compact yet well-engineered personal sidearm widely carried by officers, travelers, and European military volunteers during the mid-19th century. It features the classic Lefaucheux design system:
- Six-shot 9mm pinfire cylinder – Open-top frame – Under-barrel ejector rod on rotating housing – Lefaucheux-pattern hinged loading gate – Distinctive spur trigger guard and rounded grip profile.
The steel surfaces exhibit a smooth, even gray patina with light mottling consistent with age. Serial number LF 26089 is sharply struck on the barrel lug alongside thegood traces of blued finish remain. Lefaucheux proofmark (the crowned LF monogram). The walnut grips remain in very good condition with tight fit and honest period wear. The action needs work to function appropriately.
Lefaucheux pinfire revolvers became one of the most important transitional designs bridging percussion and metallic cartridge technology. Mechanically unsound, cylinder does not index properly; metal with pleasing untouched patina; grips fine.
A desirable and fully Paris-made Lefaucheux revolver—superior to the more common Spanish or Belgian “breveté” copies—showing clear markings.
