Description

Civil War–Era Traveling Whiskey Flask with Detachable Drinking Cup

Compact and well-made Civil War–era traveling whiskey flask, measuring approximately 4¼ inches in height, designed for personal field or travel use. The flask features a darkened body with a fitted leather covering, characteristic of mid-19th-century portable flasks carried by soldiers, travelers, or civilians.

The lower portion is fitted with a detachable metal cup, ingeniously serving as a combined protective base and drinking measure, a practical feature commonly found on period traveling flasks. This allowed the owner to pour and drink spirits without the need for additional utensils—an important convenience in camp or on the road.

The screw-top cap is intact, and the overall form and construction are fully consistent with Civil War–era manufacture (circa 1860s). Such small flasks were often carried discreetly in knapsacks, haversacks, coat pockets, or saddlebags.

A desirable and increasingly scarce example of a functional personal accoutrement, reflecting the everyday realities of life during the American Civil War.
