Civil War–Era Straight Razor — W. & S. Butcher, Sheffield
“The Celebrated American Razor” | Philadelphia Works
Straight razor manufactured by the prominent Sheffield firm W. & S. Butcher. The blade is clearly stamped “Manufactured by W. & S. Butcher, Sheffield”, along with the desirable arched mark “Celebrated for Use India Steel Razor”, denoting high-quality crucible steel prized for its durability and keen edge. The reverse tang bears the “Philadelphia Works” designation, reflecting Butcher’s American-market branding rather than domestic manufacture.
The razor retains its original dark horn scales with deeply impressed panels reading “The Celebrated American Razor” and “Philadelphia Works.”
This razor is a deaccession from the Texas museum.
