Description
Light Artillery Saber
Chatellerault, Dated 1847, with Scabbard
The heavy, curved single-edged blade remains smooth and well-defined, showing light scattered age marks and toning consistent with service use. The inscription is crisp and legible, retaining strong contrast.
The brass hilt features the correct stirrup guard with integral knuckle bow, ribbed leather grip, and twisted wire wrap, all exhibiting an attractive, untouched patina. The guard bears matching stamped numbers.
The sword is accompanied by its original steel scabbard, complete with suspension rings. The scabbard shows matching age, wear, and surface oxidation consistent with long field service, complementing the sword well.
The Manufacture d’Armes de Châtellerault “Châtellerault Weapons Factory”, abbr. MAC) was a French state-owned weapons manufacturer in the town of Châtellerault, Vienne. It was created by a royal decree of 14 July 1819 to manufacture swords, then (after 1850) firearms and cannons. Antoine Treuille de Beaulieu in 1840 began to develop the concept of rifled artillery at Châtellerault for the French Army. The Lebel Model 1886 rifle, the first military firearm to use smokeless powder ammunition and the primary French infantry weapon during World War I, was developed and produced here.
A strong, authentic, and highly collectible example suitable for advanced Civil War or U.S. edged weapons collections.
