Mississippi Rifle Saber Bayonet with Scabbard

A scarce and highly desirable Model 1861 “Mississippi” Rifle bayonet, produced for the U.S. Model 1841 rifle—commonly known as the “Mississippi Rifle.” This distinctive pattern is easily recognized by its substantial brass hilt and saber-style blade.

The bayonet features the classic heavy brass guard and ribbed grip, designed specifically for the altered Mississippi rifles that were updated to accept saber bayonets at the onset of the Civil War. The blade retains an aged, untouched surface with pleasing patina throughout.

The ricasso is marked “1861”. The hilt is additionally stamped “C 3777,” likely an assembly or inspection number.

Accompanying the bayonet is its period leather scabbard. The scabbard remains solid and complete, retaining its original brass throat and tip. The leather body shows honest field wear and age, with surface crazing and natural darkening consistent with Civil War–era service. Stitching remains intact and the overall form is strong, providing excellent display presence when paired with the bayonet.

These bayonets were issued to both Union and, through capture and battlefield use, occasionally Confederate forces during the early years of the war. Their association with the famed Mississippi Rifle makes them particularly appealing to collectors.

A strong Civil War–era edged weapon with excellent eye appeal and honest age. An important accessory to the iconic Mississippi rifle and a standout addition to any serious Civil War collection.
