Model 1861 Springfield rifle musket in .58 caliber identified to C. Geissler of the 128th Pennsylvania Infantry.
The lock is dated 1862 and marked U.S. Springfield with the eagle motif. A captured and reissued letter “Z” appears stamped into the underside of the stock.

Identified Civil War firearms associated with specific soldiers or regiments provide a direct connection to the men who carried them in the field. Additional layer of history being a Captured-and-reissued arms add an especially appealing layer of Civil War history, since they directly reflect battlefield recovery and the constant recycling of military equipment by both sides. Union-made rifle muskets taken in action were frequently put back into Confederate service, while captured Southern arms could likewise be reissued when needed. Marks of corps ownership, unit use, and reissue all strengthen the historical character.
