Description

Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber by Sheble & Fisher

A solid and complete Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber produced by Sheble & Fisher of Philadelphia. The blade exhibits an even salt-and-pepper patina overall, with a more pronounced darkened area along the midsection of the left side. The maker’s stamp, “Sheble & Fisher / Phila,” remains visible near the hilt, confirming this well-known wartime contractor. The blade is of the flat-backed variety and shows honest age without evidence of excessive cleaning.

The brass guard and pommel retain a pleasing, untouched brownish patina with subtle highlights of underlying yellow brass showing through. The grip remains strong, with much of the original leather covering intact and the twisted wire wrap still present and secure.

The matching steel scabbard carries a deep, dark brown patina throughout, with only minor wear. A small shallow dent is noted on the right side just below the upper ring mount. The leather throat washer remains intact at the guard junction, an often-missing feature.

A fine, honest Civil War cavalry saber, representative of the rugged Sheble & Fisher production, and a desirable complete example of the famed Model 1840 “Old Wrist Breaker.”
