Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber with Inspector Marks

 

A well-preserved Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber retaining its original scabbard. The flat-backed blade shows a bright surface with scattered areas of light to moderate patina, including a few darker spots consistent with age and service use. Visible near the guard are the famous firm of Tiffany of New York markings, adding desirable period authenticity.

 

The brass hilt has mellowed to a subdued, aged tone, with an even, untouched patina throughout. The grip has lost most of its original leather covering, leaving the underlying wood exposed, while portions of the twisted wire wrap remain in place.

 

The accompanying steel scabbard displays a smooth, dark brown patina with a consistent surface and honest wear. The mounts remain intact, and the overall presentation is that of a complete, untouched set.

 

A solid and attractive Civil War cavalry saber, offering good markings, original components, and classic “Old Wrist Breaker” character.
