Description
Fife with Silver Ferrules, Maker Marked Geo Cloos Crosby
An original mid-19th century fife of turned rosewood, fitted with a silver ferrule at the mouthpiece end, marker marked Geo Cloos Crosby. Measuring approximately 17” this simple but durable instrument represents the type commonly carried and played in the 1860’s-1870’s. The rosewood, body has developed a pleasing aged patina, while the silver ferrule shows darkened surface from period use and oxidation.
Fifes, along with drums, were essential for signaling commands in camp and on the march, as well as for maintaining cadence and morale. Surviving examples with period ferrules are increasingly scarce, as many were used hard and worn out during service.
