Early Revolutionary War Brown Bess Style Socket Bayonet

 

An original early Revolutionary War-period Brown Bess style socket bayonet, representative of the type carried by British troops and colonial forces during the latter half of the 18th century. This example features the classic three-sided tapered blade with an early style socket, characteristic of the first patterns produced for the famed Brown Bess musket.

 

The blade measures approximately 14½ inches in length and exhibits an attractive dark brown patina throughout. Moderate pitting is present along the flat of the blade and on the socket, consistent with its age and long-term preservation. No visible maker’s or inspection marks are present on the blade or socket.

 

The socket slot remains open today but appears to have been originally manufactured in the closed-slot configuration, a feature associated with early Brown Bess socket bayonets. The overall form, construction, and tapering blade are consistent with an early Brown Bess pattern dating to the Revolutionary War era.

 

Despite honest age and oxidation, the bayonet remains a desirable example of one of the most recognizable edged weapons of the American Revolution. Brown Bess bayonets accompanied British infantry throughout the conflict and were also used by Loyalist troops and, through battlefield capture and wartime supply, occasionally by American forces.

 

A fine representative Revolutionary War socket bayonet that would make an excellent addition to any collection of 18th-century military arms, Revolutionary War artifacts, or British martial equipment.
