An original autograph of William Henry Seward (1801–1872), signed beneath his handwritten complimentary closing, “I am very sincerely Yours,” in his distinctive flowing script. William H. Seward served as Secretary of State under Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson from 1861 to 1869. As Lincoln’s closest cabinet advisor on foreign affairs, Seward played a critical role in preventing European recognition of the Confederacy during the Civil War, helping preserve the Union through diplomacy as well as military success. Following the war, he negotiated the 1867 purchase of Alaska from Russia, a landmark acquisition once derided as “Seward’s Folly” but ultimately recognized as one of the greatest diplomatic achievements in American history
