The Commanders of Our Forces” Civil War Card Game McLoughlin Brothers, New York
A scarce and charming Civil War-era educational card game titled “The Commanders of Our Forces,” published by the renowned McLoughlin Brothers of New York during the Civil War. Designed as “A Game for Old and Young,” this patriotic set introduced players to the Union Army’s leading commanders and the major battles and campaigns in which they served.
The original illustrated game box features dramatic wartime artwork depicting Union troops advancing under fire, setting the patriotic tone for one of the era’s most popular military-themed parlor games. Each card bears the name of a prominent Union general or significant battle, with related campaigns and engagements printed beneath. Examples shown include:
General Benjamin F. Butler, General Quincy A. Gillmore, General Nathaniel P. Banks, Gettysburg, Fort Donelson, Fort Pulaski, Fort Wagner, New Orleans, Rocky Mountains, and Kinston, North Carolina.
The game was produced during the height of the Civil War to educate and entertain families while celebrating Union military achievements. Patriotic games of this nature became immensely popular on the home front, allowing children and adults alike to follow current events and familiarize themselves with the commanders whose names regularly appeared in wartime newspapers.
This set retains its original illustrated box together with 34 original playing cards. Complete or near-complete examples of Civil War parlor games are increasingly difficult to locate, particularly those retaining their original decorative box. Their combination of military history, social history, and colorful period graphics makes them highly desirable among collectors of Civil War memorabilia, nineteenth-century games, patriotic Americana, and McLoughlin Brothers publications.
An outstanding survivor from the American Civil War, this rare game offers a fascinating glimpse into how the conflict was brought into the parlors and classrooms of the Northern home front, transforming military history into an engaging educational pastime.
