Description
Civil War Murphy & Griswold Infantry Forage Cap
5th Regiment, Company E
A fine original Civil War enlisted man’s Model 1858 forage cap manufactured by the well-known wartime contractor Murphy & Griswold of New York. The cap retains its original dark blue wool body with complete leather visor, chinstrap, and brass buckle. Most notably, it is complete with its original Murphy & Griswold maker’s label and original polished cotton lining—features often missing from surviving examples.
The front is attractively adorned with an original brass infantry hunting horn insignia displaying the company letter “E”, surmounted by the regimental numeral “5”, identifying the cap to Company E, 5th Regiment. The insignia displays an untouched, pleasing patina and remains securely mounted.
Condition is excellent overall for a wartime forage cap. The leather visor remains firmly attached, the original lining is intact, and the manufacturer’s label is present. There are a few light moth nips to the wool body along with two minor seam separations, neither of which detracts from the cap’s outstanding eye appeal or historical integrity.
Murphy & Griswold produced some of the highest-quality Federal headgear during the Civil War, and caps retaining their original maker’s label, lining, and complete period insignia are increasingly difficult to obtain. This is an attractive, untouched example that would make an exceptional addition to any advanced Civil War headgear or Union infantry collection.
