1778 Model Marine Musket Converted to Percussion

 

An attractive and historically interesting Model 1778 Marine Musket, later converted from flintlock to percussion using a threaded drum and bolster system. The lockplate is marked in 18th-century style script, adding to its period character and visual appeal.

 

The barrel exhibits a smooth, dark brown patina and shows clear inspection markings, including proof and inspector stamps at the breech. Steel components throughout display a consistent, aged tone, while the brass furniture—including side plate, trigger guard, and buttplate—retains a warm, mellow patina with scattered darker spotting from long service.

 

The stock remains solid and well-preserved, bearing handling wear consistent with age. The right side of the buttstock is stamped with the initials “AN” over “CAP,” with additional carved initials present, likely period ownership or militia markings. Sling swivels are intact, and the ramrod is present, fitted for use with a socket bayonet via the under-barrel lug.

 

A complete and visually appealing example of an early American military arm that reflects both its Revolutionary-era origins and later percussion-era adaptation.
