1833 Model Dragoon Saber with Regimental Markings
A scarce and highly desirable U.S. Model 1833 Dragoon Saber retaining notable regimental markings to the scabbard. The spine-backed blade presents a dark gray patina with pronounced peppering throughout, accompanied by darker areas of age toning. The left face retains visible etched foliate scrollwork extending approximately fourteen inches from the guard, with faint traces of an etched cursive panel just beyond—now largely obscured by age and patina.
The iron hilt, including the guard and pommel, exhibits a deep, even dark brown patina with no evident markings. The grip retains its original leather covering and brass wire wrap, showing honest wear consistent with field use. The forward ferrule features a brass ring, now split at the base, a common occurrence on early examples. Despite this, the hilt remains structurally sound.
The accompanying steel scabbard displays a rich, dark brown patina and remains free of dents or major deformities. Notably, the right side of the drag is regimentally marked to the 2nd U.S. Dragoons, reading “US 2D,” adding significant historical interest and collectibility. The leather throat washer remains intact where the blade meets the guard.
A strong, untouched early dragoon saber with desirable regimental association and visible blade etching—an increasingly difficult configuration to acquire.
