Description
1864 McClellan & Pendleton Democratic Presidential Campaign Token
Original 1864 political campaign token issued in support of Democratic presidential candidate George B. McClellan and his running mate George H. Pendleton during the American Civil War.
The obverse features a left-facing portrait of McClellan surrounded by the inscription “McCLELLAN & PENDLETON DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES” and dated 1864. The engraver’s name, W.H. Key, appears beneath the portrait.
The reverse displays a patriotic scroll and quill motif surrounded by the inscription “THE CONSTITUTION AS IT IS / THE HOPE OF THE UNION.”
McClellan, the former commander of the Army of the Potomac, challenged Abraham Lincoln in the contentious presidential election of 1864, making campaign pieces from this election particularly interesting Civil War-era political memorabilia.
This example retains strong detail with an attractive aged surface and exhibits honest period wear consistent with its age.
A desirable Civil War political campaign piece connecting one of the Union Army’s best-known generals with the historic presidential election of 1864.
