Description
Abraham Lincoln William Matthew Prior (1806–1873)
Reverse Glass Painting of Abraham Lincoln A striking reverse oil on glass portrait of President Abraham Lincoln, executed by noted folk portraitist William Matthew Prior (1806–1873). The painting presents a finely rendered bust-length likeness of Lincoln in his familiar black coat, white shirt, and bow tie, set against a soft neutral ground. Typical of Prior’s technique, the image is painted in reverse directly onto the glass surface, with excellent preservation of color and detail. The piece remains housed in its original walnut frame with gilt fillet, lending the work both elegance and period authenticity. Reverse paintings by Prior are scarce, and presidential subjects—particularly Lincoln—are highly desirable, combining both fine folk artistry and patriotic sentiment. Condition is very good, with only minor age-appropriate imperfections to the surface and frame. An outstanding example of mid-19th-century American folk portraiture, and a rare period depiction of the martyred president.
