Barnett Contract Enfield Import
$1,800.00
Description
Barnett Contract Enfield Import
English Enfield pattern rifle musket manufactured by Barnett of London and imported during the Civil War. This example represents a variant without traditional barrel bands, utilizing a pinned barrel arrangement.
The steel components show a dark brown patina while the brass furniture retains a mellow yellow tone. The lock is marked Barnett London beneath the bolster.
Evidence of service use includes minor pitting near the breech and stock wear where wood was removed long ago to facilitate barrel removal. Barnett rifles were among the many British arms exported to North America during the Civil War.
The Pattern 1853 Enfield and its related contract variants were among the most influential imported arms of the Civil War, second only to the Springfield in overall battlefield presence. British production filled an enormous wartime demand, and both Union and Confederate purchasing agents secured large numbers of these dependable rifle muskets. Contractor-marked examples, especially those showing service wear and period modifications, remain a major collecting field in their own right.
