Canteen of Canteen of Benjamin D. Reed – Inventory Number: IDE 108 |  Sold 30th Unattached Co. Heavy Artillery Mass. Vol. Masonic Insignia and name stenciled on the sling, the original blue cover, stopper and sling.  One of the finest examples of a Civil War canteen as we’ve had to offer in 30 years! Benjamin Dana Reed: Residence Chicopee MA; a 37 year-old Armorer. Enlisted on 8/29/1864 as a Private. On 9/1/1864 he mustered into “30th” Co. MA Unattached Heavy Artillery He was Mustered Out on 6/16/1865 Other Information: Born in Barnard, VT Member of GAR Post # 41 (Lyon) in Westfield, MA Died 6/5/1909 MASSACHUSETTS 30TH UNATTACHED, HEAVY ARTILLERY Three Years      Thirtieth Unattached Company, Heavy Artillery.-Capt., Samuel R. Bingham.  This organization numbered 4 officers and 146 enlisted men and had no losses during service.  It was mustered into the U.S. service in the early part of Sept., 1864, and left on the 26th for Washington, where it was employed throughout its term of service, and was mustered out at the same time as the 29th company.
