Civil War Era Musical Clappers 

 

A fascinating and seldom-seen pair of Civil War-era musical clappers, reportedly discovered in a Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) Hall in Orange County, New York, from the renowned Herb Brown Collection. While later housed and preserved by Union veterans, these unusual instruments date to the wartime period itself. 

 

Constructed of hand-forged iron with ball-shaped striking heads, the clappers would have been played in pairs to create rhythmic accompaniment, much like bones, spoons, or other traditional folk percussion instruments popular among soldiers and civilians alike. Music played an essential role in camp life, providing entertainment, boosting morale, and fostering camaraderie during long periods away from home. 

 

Authentic Civil War-era musical artifacts are rarely encountered, making this pair an especially appealing survivor of the period.
