Civil War Model 1852 Naval Officer’s Sword Identified to Dr. David Mack, Jr., U.S. Navy 

An outstanding Civil War-era Model 1852 Naval Officer’s Sword manufactured by the Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts, and identified to Dr. David Mack, Jr., U.S. Navy. Accompanying the sword is an extensive research and provenance binder documenting Dr. Mack’s naval service, significantly enhancing the historical importance and desirability of the piece. 

Adopted in 1852 and still recognized today as the traditional sword of United States naval officers, this distinctive pattern was carried by officers serving aboard Union warships during the Civil War. The elegant design features the classic brass hilt with naval motifs, sharkskin-covered grip, and black leather scabbard with brass mounts characteristic of the regulation naval officer’s sword. 

The hilt remains in excellent condition, retaining an attractive untouched patina. The original sharkskin grip is exceptionally well preserved and remains tightly wrapped with its original wire binding. The brass guard exhibits the refined craftsmanship for which Ames was renowned, while the overall presentation reflects careful preservation over more than 160 years. 

The black leather scabbard remains remarkably attractive with strong original finish and well-preserved brass mounts. The carrying rings are intact, and the scabbard displays beautifully, exhibiting only minor signs of age and handling. The bade does have a series of five or so dents from either service or more likely child’s play after the war.  The overall condition is notably superior to that found on many surviving Civil War naval swords. 

Of particular significance is the identification to Dr. David Mack, Jr., a surgeon in the United States Navy during the Civil War era. Included with the sword is a comprehensive research and provenance file compiled by The Union Drummer Boy, containing historical documentation, service information, and supporting material relating to Dr. Mack’s naval career. Such documented attribution elevates the sword well beyond a standard example, providing a direct connection to a known naval officer who served during one of the most important periods in American history. 

Identified Civil War naval swords are encountered far less frequently than their army counterparts, and examples accompanied by substantial research are especially desirable.
