 Civil War Roll-Up Soldier’s “Housewife” Sewing Kit 

A wonderful and unusually colorful Civil War period soldier’s roll-up “housewife,” constructed from seven distinctly different patterned fabrics, each carefully incorporated into the individual pockets and sections of the kit. The variety of printed cottons gives the piece tremendous visual character and reflects the resourceful, hand-sewn construction so often associated with these personal wartime sewing kits. 

Housewives were indispensable pieces of a soldier’s personal equipment, carried for the repair of uniforms, shirts, socks, and other clothing while in camp or on campaign. Many were made at home by mothers, wives, sisters, or sweethearts and sent with the soldier, giving these otherwise utilitarian objects an especially personal connection to the Civil War soldier. 

This example survives in remarkably excellent condition, retaining its multiple vibrant fabrics, edge binding, pockets, and original tie cord with tassel. Particularly appealing is the extraordinary variety of period textile patterns—seven different materials in a single housewife—creating an almost sampler-like appearance when completely opened. 

A wonderful, complete-appearing wartime example, beautifully preserved and considerably more decorative than the typical Civil War soldier’s housewife encountered today.
