Confederate Model 1795/1808 Conversion Musketoon with Silver Inlays

Early U.S. Model 1795/1808 musket, converted from flintlock to percussion and shortened to musketoon length, attributed to Confederate service in the accompanying collection notes. This distinctive .69 caliber smoothbore features a 32½-inch barrel, a threaded side bolster, and a blacksmith-made hammer with an elegantly curved, hook-shaped profile.

The steel components retain a smooth, deep brown patina. No markings remain visible on the lockplate or barrel, although the sideplate bears the stamped number “17.” The trigger guard retains the pointed finial ends associated with the Model 1795 pattern. Its sling-swivel mount has been removed, and neither sling swivels nor a bayonet lug are present. A blacksmith-brazed, button-tip ramrod accompanies the piece.

The high-combed stock is further distinguished by three silver inlays: a triangle on the lower right side of the buttstock, with another triangle and a central oval on the left. The oval bears faint, undecipherable initials, adding a personal detail to this individually modified arm.

The stock remains generally solid, with several noted condition issues. A small sliver of wood is missing at the forward end of the lockplate, and a two-inch crack passes through the wood beneath it. Additional fine hairline cracks appear on the underside just forward of the trigger guard and on the left side behind the rear sideplate screw.

An unusual early musket conversion whose handcrafted hammer, shortened configuration, and silver-inlaid stock give it considerable visual character and collector interest.
