Confederate Reissued Model 1861 Bridesburg Rifle Musket

Captured and Collected Marking as well as Carved 2nd Corps Badge!

Carving on stock said to have been brought back by a member of the 127th PA Infantry – Cursory research ongoing!

Model 1861 rifle musket produced under contract by the Bridesburg Manufacturing Company with lock dated 1863.

Evidence suggests this musket was captured from Union forces of the 2nd Army Corps and subsequently reissued for Confederate use. The distinctive clover emblem associated with the Union Second Corps is carved into the stock opposite the lock.

The barrel retains visible rifling and the VP and eagle head proof marks remain on the barrel flat. Metal surfaces display a dark even patina with lighter wear at the muzzle from bayonet use.

Confederate reissued Union arms represent the captured and collected aspect of Civil War logistics as captured equipment was frequently placed back into service by Southern armies.

Captured-and-reissued arms add an especially appealing layer of Civil War history, since they directly reflect battlefield recovery and the constant recycling of military equipment by both sides. Union-made rifle muskets taken in action were frequently put back into Confederate service, while captured Southern arms could likewise be reissued when needed. Marks of corps ownership, unit use, and reissue make this an intense research project worthy of any collection.
