 Federal Hotchkiss Artillery Shell 

 

2.94 inches GUN: 3-inch wrought iron (ordnance) rifle LENGTH: 6 5/16 inches WEIGHT: 9 pounds 8 ounces CONSTRUCTION: Shell SABOT: Lead band FUZING: Hotchkiss brass fuze plug, paper time fuze. This Hotchkiss projectile is of a 1864-1865 production. The flat nose version was originally fitted with a standard brass Hotchkiss time fuze plug. The body of the shell has three flame grooves which aided the propellant flame in reaching the paper time fuze. Slightly rounded base cup. Specimens have been recovered in Nashville, Tennessee, and at Spanish Fort, Alabama.
