Framed Edwin Booth Signature & Portrait Display

An attractive framed display featuring an original signature of Edwin Booth (1833–1893), widely regarded as the greatest American Shakespearean actor of the 19th century. The display combines a period portrait engraving of Booth with an 1887 Aquidneck National Bank check signed by him in Newport, Rhode Island. Booth’s elegant signature remains one of the most sought-after autographs in American theater history, made even more historically significant by his relationship to his younger brother, John Wilkes Booth, the assassin of President Abraham Lincoln.

Despite the infamy surrounding his family name after the events of April 1865, Edwin Booth rebuilt his career and became one of the most celebrated actors of the Victorian era. His performances as Hamlet, Richelieu, and Richard III earned international acclaim, while his ownership of New York’s famed Booth’s Theatre cemented his place in American cultural history.

The signed check, dated February 4, 1887, represents Booth during the height of his later career and serves as an excellent example of his authentic autograph. Tastefully paired with a contemporary portrait and housed in an elegant presentation frame, this display offers both strong visual appeal and significant historical interest, connecting American theater, the Lincoln era, and one of the most fascinating families of the 19th century.
