Striking late 19th-century portrait print of Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston, published by The Manhattan Art Co., New York, retaining its original period oak frame. The image presents Johnston in formal Confederate uniform with wreath embellishment and decorative banner naming the celebrated Southern commander. Executed in rich sepia tones with strong detail to the facial features and uniform insignia, the portrait possesses an unmistakable postwar memorial quality popular among former Confederate veterans and Southern households during the reunion era. 

The Manhattan Art Company of New York produced decorative historical and patriotic prints during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and surviving Confederate-themed examples are increasingly difficult to locate, particularly when preserved in their original frames. Johnston remains one of the Confederacy’s most important and controversial generals, serving in major commands from First Manassas through the Atlanta Campaign and later surrendering the Army of Tennessee to Sherman in 1865.
