Description
Manhattan Arms Model 1851 Pocket Navy Revolver
A scarce Manhattan Arms Model 1851 Pocket Navy Revolver chambered in .36 caliber, retaining matching serial numbers on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, wedge pin, and beneath the grips, all numbered 33976. The revolver displays an attractive dark gray patina across the steel surfaces with a soft untouched appearance and traces of original finish still remaining.
The top barrel flat is marked “Manhattan Fire Arms Co. Newark N.J.” while the rear of the cylinder between two of the nipples bears the patent date “Patented Dec. 27, 1859.” The cylinder retains visible etched panel designs, and the brass trigger guard and backstrap still show traces of their original silver plating. Additional remnants of silver plating remain visible along the lower portion of the grip frame. The walnut grips are complete and retain an attractive auburn-brown tone with honest age and handling wear. Mechanically, the revolver remains functional and in working order.
Produced during the Civil War era, Manhattan Arms revolvers were among the more successful competitors to Colt and saw both civilian and military use throughout the period. Their quality construction and classic styling have made them increasingly desirable among collectors of secondary martial revolvers.
A strong and very displayable Civil War-era pocket revolver retaining pleasing surfaces, matching numbers, and traces of original finish.
