Description

Model 1816 Springfield Conversion Musket Dated 1837

A well-preserved example of the Model 1816 Springfield musket, later altered from flintlock to percussion, representing a classic and widely utilized U.S. military arm that bridged early 19th-century service through the Civil War era. The lock is clearly dated 1837 and bears the expected federal eagle over “U.S.” marking, remaining legible with an attractive, untouched patina.

This piece exhibits the typical cone-in-barrel percussion conversion, a common and period-correct alteration performed to modernize earlier flintlock arms. The barrel retains a smooth bore in .69 caliber, with dark patina—consistent with age and long-term storage rather than modern intervention.

The stock remains solid and pleasing, showing honest wear with an oval inspector’s cartouche faintly visible on the reverse of the buttstock. Initials are carved into the left side of the stock, adding a layer of period personalization often sought by collectors. Metal surfaces display a consistent, undisturbed patina, with the lock and hammer showing matching age and tone.

Overall, this musket presents as a strong, representative example of a U.S. Model 1816 conversion—retaining clear markings, good structural integrity, and desirable signs of period use. Pieces of this type played a significant role in early Civil War arming, particularly in the war’s opening phases when older converted arms were pressed back into service.
