Description
Model 1839 Cartridge Box – Non-Punched for Box Plate
A scarce and desirable Model 1839 cartridge box of the early war pattern, featuring the non-punched flap configuration intended for use with a box plate. The outer flap retains its smooth, unmodified form, characteristic of pre-1857 production.
The leather remains supple with a rich, dark patina. The latch tab and closure hardware are present, showing age and use but remaining intact. The interior is fitted with its original tin cartridge liner, complete with individual compartments, displaying expected oxidation while remaining solid and highly presentable.
The reverse retains both belt loops and buckles, preserving the classic configuration for shoulder sling attachment. Stitching remains largely intact throughout, reinforcing the box’s structural integrity and originality.
Model 1839 cartridge boxes represent the transitional early-war accoutrement, with non-punched examples for box plates being particularly sought after by advanced collectors. Surviving examples retaining strong form, interior tins, and complete hardware are increasingly difficult to obtain.
A well-preserved and highly collectible example of an early Civil War infantry cartridge box, offering excellent display and historical significance.
