Description

Model 1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber

A classic example of the iconic Model 1840 “wristbreaker” cavalry saber, offered complete with its original steel scabbard. The blade remains bright overall, showing light peppering concentrated near the ricasso area, and retains a clean, well-defined profile. No visible maker or inspector markings are present on the blade flats near the guard. The edge exhibits a few small nicks toward the tip, consistent with historic blade-to-blade contact.

The brass hilt displays an attractive, untouched mellow yellow patina. Both the guard and pommel cap are stamped with the number “93,” suggesting period rack or issue marking. The grip retains its original leather covering and twisted wire wrap, both remaining intact, with only minor wear. A small remnant of the original leather washer survives at the blade/guard junction.

The accompanying steel scabbard has a smooth gray tone with scattered darker patina, free from major damage and nicely matching the saber.
A solid, honest Civil War cavalry saber showing expected service wear, yet remaining a complete and desirable example.
