Description

Model 1841 / 1842 U.S. Combination Takedown Tool

Scarce and desirable U.S. combination takedown tool associated with the Model 1841 “Mississippi” rifle and later altered Model 1842 pattern arms. These compact, multi-functional tools were issued for the maintenance and disassembly of percussion longarms, incorporating screwdriver and nipple wrench features necessary for field service.

This example presents in solid, honest condition, retaining a smooth, untouched patina with light wear consistent with period use. The form remains well-defined, with functional edges and no evidence of abuse. Such tools were frequently lost or heavily worn in service, making surviving examples increasingly scarce.

Directly associated with one of the most iconic American martial arms—the Model 1841 rifle, widely used in both Mexican War service and the Civil War—this tool represents an important and often overlooked accoutrement. A strong example, ideal for display alongside a Mississippi rifle or within an advanced collection of U.S. military tools.
