Description

Model 1861 Springfield Rifle Musket

U.S. Model 1861 Springfield rifle musket, one of the most recognizable infantry weapons of the American Civil War. The lock is dated 1862 and the musket retains its .58 caliber rifled barrel.

Rifling grooves remain visible though showing minor pitting from service use. The Model 1861 became the standard infantry arm of the Union Army and was produced in enormous quantities by Springfield Armory and numerous private contractors.

This example features a stretched stock repair where the fore‑stock has been replaced forward of the rear barrel band. Barrel bands have been replaced with rounded 1863 pattern bands, each bearing a clear “U” stamp.

The rear sight remains intact. The number “66” stamped in the top of the buttstock near the buttplate likely represents an armory rack number.

The barrel retains areas of armory bright finish with scattered peppering consistent with age and service.

Well-documented military arms of this sort are prized because they combine clear physical evidence of service with the broader story of American arms development. Original markings, period wear, arsenal alterations, and identifiable features all contribute to the historical integrity of the piece. Examples retaining strong character and readable details continue to attract collectors seeking honest, study-worthy martial arms for advanced collections.
