Painted “Cheesebox” Canteen
This fine example of a 1840’s “cheesebox” style wooden canteen. It is beautifully accented with a hand-painted pink floral design, adding a rare decorative touch to an otherwise utilitarian field item. Cheesebox canteens were commonly carried by soldiers early in the war, and surviving painted examples are scarce, as most were left plain or lost to hard use.
A wonderful piece that blends the rugged necessity of a soldier’s kit with a glimpse of personal or sentimental expression.
