Description
Patriotic & Merchant Civil War Token Bracelet, Dated 1863
An exceptional and highly unusual piece of Civil War-era folk jewelry fashioned from seven original 1863 patriotic and merchant store card cent tokens. During the coin shortage that plagued the North in 1862–1864, thousands of privately issued copper tokens circulated in commerce, often bearing patriotic slogans, national symbols, and merchant advertising. Here, a contemporary owner carefully linked together a selection of these tokens to create a wearable bracelet, transforming everyday wartime currency into a personal statement of patriotism and fashion.
The bracelet incorporates a fascinating mix of patriotic and merchant issues, each retaining its original Civil War-era character and attractive aged copper patina. The hand-linked construction is entirely consistent with period-made jewelry, reflecting the ingenuity and resourcefulness common on the home front during the conflict. Surviving examples of Civil War token jewelry are scarce, and bracelets are encountered far less frequently than individual tokens.
