Description

Rare Colored Civil War-Era Declaration of Independence, Circa 1861

Rare and visually striking colored printing of the Declaration of Independence, dating to approximately 1861 and the opening of the Civil War. Produced at a moment when the principles of 1776 had taken on renewed and profound significance, patriotic printings of the Declaration served as powerful reminders of the founding ideals of the United States as the nation confronted secession and civil war.

Particularly desirable is the colored format, providing considerably more visual impact than the more commonly encountered monochrome patriotic broadsides and facsimiles of the period. Such pieces were intended for prominent display in homes, offices, meeting halls, and other public spaces, where the Declaration and its celebrated signatures represented both the nation’s Revolutionary origins and the preservation of the Union.

A scarce piece of Civil War-era Americana, combining the imagery and language of the American Revolution with the intense patriotism of 1861. The survival of a colored example from this turbulent period makes it an especially impressive display piece
