Description
The Pullman Company Stock Certificate Signed by Robert Todd Lincoln
An outstanding and highly desirable 1905 stock certificate of The Pullman Company, boldly signed by Robert Todd Lincoln (1843–1926), the eldest son of President Abraham Lincoln. Following a distinguished career that included service as Secretary of War under Presidents Garfield and Arthur and Minister to Great Britain, Lincoln became deeply involved in American industry and served as President and later Chairman of the Pullman Company, one of the most influential corporations of the Gilded Age and early twentieth century.
This attractive certificate is made even more unusual by its cancellation markings. The large transfer cancellations were applied in the form of a Christian Cross, with the intersecting cancellation punches extending directly through the certificate and crossing over Lincoln’s signature. The reverse side displays corresponding cancellation impressions, creating a striking visual effect and an uncommon presentation seldom encountered on surviving stock certificates.
The Pullman Company revolutionized American rail travel through its luxurious sleeping cars and became one of the most recognized corporate names in the United States. Documents signed by Robert Todd Lincoln are increasingly sought after due to his direct connection to the Lincoln family, his important public service career, and his leadership of one of America’s premier industrial enterprises.
A visually impressive and historically significant piece combining Lincoln family history, American business history.
