$1,750.00
Description
U.S. Model 1842 Harpers Ferry Smoothbore Musket – Dated 1849
Fine, complete example of a U.S. Model 1842 .69 caliber smoothbore percussion musket, manufactured at the highly desirable Harpers Ferry National Armory in 1849.
The steel surfaces display a pleasing, untouched appearance with heavy areas of dark brown patina throughout, along with scattered areas of lighter gray showing through. The lockplate is clearly marked with the Eagle and “US” beneath the bolster, with “HARPERS FERRY 1849” at the rear. The 1849 manufacture date is also stamped on the barrel tang.
The breech of the barrel bears an Eagle Head along with the inspector’s “V P” viewed and proofed markings. The “US” stamping on the top of the butt plate remains clearly visible.
Mechanically, the lock remains in full working order, with the hammer securely holding in both the half-cock and full-cock positions. Both original sling swivels remain intact. The musket retains its original trumpet-tipped ramrod, with the base still threaded for the attachment of cleaning tools.
The walnut stock is complete and displays only minor dings, scratches, and other honest wear consistent with its age. An oval inspector’s cartouche remains faintly visible in the wood behind the side plate. A letter “B” has been period-etched or carved into the left side of the buttstock in an inverted position.
An attractive, complete, and untouched example of the iconic Model 1842 U.S. martial musket from Harpers Ferry—one of the most historically significant American national armories. A desirable piece for the advanced U.S. martial arms or Civil War collection.
