U.S. Model 1840 Artillery Saber
Ames Mfg. Co., Chicopee, Mass.
Dated 1856
A fine pre-Civil War example of the classic U.S. Model 1840 artillery saber, manufactured by Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts and dated 1856.
The ricasso is crisply marked:
AMES MFG CO / CHICOPEE / 1856
The reverse is stamped:
US / A.D.K.
Indicating U.S. acceptance with inspector initials.
This regulation pattern sword features a heavy brass half-basket guard with flowing quillon, displaying a rich, untouched mustard patina. The leather-wrapped grip remains tight and retains its original twisted brass wire, showing honest age without repair or replacement.
The straight blade exhibits a pleasing gray tone with light surface freckling consistent with age, retaining strong edge lines and crisp markings.
Dated five years prior to the outbreak of the Civil War, this sword represents a regulation pattern that would see extensive service during the conflict. Ames was the premier American military sword maker of the 19th century, and early-dated examples such as this are increasingly difficult to find in original condition.
