Description
Virginia State Seal Button – Mitchell & Tyler, Richmond, Virginia
Fine two-piece gilt brass Virginia State Seal button featuring Virtus standing over the fallen tyrant beneath the state motto “Sic Semper Tyrannis.” The reverse bears the desirable Mitchell & Tyler, Richmond, Virginia backmark and retains its original shank.
Mitchell & Tyler was a well-known Richmond military outfitter and supplier of military accoutrements during the antebellum and Civil War periods. Virginia state seal buttons with Richmond backmarks are especially prized by collectors due to their direct association with the Commonwealth and their use by Virginia militia and military organizations.
This example retains substantial original gilt with sharp detail throughout the design. The backmark is crisp and fully legible, while the original shank remains intact. The button displays beautifully and would make an outstanding addition to any collection of Virginia, Confederate, militia, or Civil War-era buttons.
